Angus Vasili

Angus studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Liverpool John Moores University. What inspires your work as an artist? My surrounding has always inspired me from natural landscapes to modern and contemporary architecture. I find a lot of my inspiration in the mundane, in the subtle textures and patterns of everyday life; marks on concrete scratches, on worn metal or graphics found on manhole covers. Stumbling upon these to use within my work, almost like a happy accident has always felt more compelling and powerful than attempting to emulate these textures artificially. Who are your biggest influences? My influences are constantly changing. I do find my influences in a number of graphic artists including Kate Gibb and Jimmy Turrell. I love their contemporary style, their use of bold colours and their choice of form which create a rich depth to their pieces. Gfeller + Hellsgård's process of pushing screenprinting to the extreme has particularly inspired my recent body of work helping me explore the boundaries of my own practice. What does your work mean to you? I find creating to be meditative. It can be completely all-encompassing, I go through a range of emotions with each piece bringing a different experience. Sometimes it can be a battle but when it all just clicks into place everything makes sense. What techniques do you use? I use digital and analogue techniques, combining photography hand rendered textures and screenprinting. My practice is ‘loose and intuitive’ relying on the aleatory nature of the printing process and those happy accidents in the analogue technique that bring about some wonderful imperfections.
