Stephen Lawlor

Stephen’s work is an ongoing engagement with European painting from roughly 1400 to 1800. He appropriates elements from carefully selected paintings and combines and juxtaposes them through loose mark making with needle, acid and brush. Between landscape and the human form, abstraction and figuration, his prints explore and open up something in our collective memory of images that can be familiar or obscure. These ghost-remnants of icons appear to stretch backward in time. He see’s them as small windows onto a hazy subconscious.
