Frankie Thorp

Frankie Thorp is a contemporary painter, living and working in London. She studied illustration at London College of Communication. What inspires your work as an artist? My main source of inspiration comes from film and cinematography as I find they offer great examples of the interaction between colour and composition. Also food and travel, I am a massive foodie. I think food and drink can be very reminiscent of a trip abroad and I like to bring that romanticism into my work. Who are your biggest influences? Matisse, Mary Fedden, Tal R, William Scott and Henni Alftan. I like artists that imply narrative or have a story to tell through their work.

What does your work mean to you?

My work is a representation of leisurely dining with good company and good cocktails. I want it to be fun, playful and maybe sometimes a little bit ‘cheeky’ with a nod to fond memories of a summer holiday.

What techniques do you use?

Mainly acrylic and oil pastel on stretched canvas. I occasionally use oil paint over acrylic for added texture. All my paintings start with me deciding on the colour palette. I normally know the exact shades I want to use in a piece and will be strict on not introducing too many colours.
